New Standing Order

New Standing Order

Use Standing Orders to schedule tests at defined intervals (e.g., daily, weekly, monthly, annually) so recurring work is created automatically, reducing manual entry and preventing missed labs.

Compliance reminder: Standing orders must be authorized by a licensed provider. Maintain proper documentation (signed order, medical necessity/diagnoses, prior authorization or ABN when required) to meet regulatory and payer requirements.

Best practices:

  • Review standing orders periodically for ongoing clinical appropriateness.
  • Pause, resume, or cancel as the care plan changes.
  • Verify payer rules for frequency limits and coverage before activation.

📘 Instructions

Steps to create a standing order (clear and streamlined)

  1. Select the patient
  • Open the Standing Orders module and choose the patient (or create a new patient if needed).
  1. Choose the ordering provider(s)
  • Select the default ordering physician for the standing order.
  • If some tests will be ordered by different physicians, assign providers at the test level where applicable.
  1. Add tests/panels
  • Add one or more tests or panels from your catalog.
  • Batch add is supported (multiple tests at once).
  1. Define the schedule
  • Frequency: daily, weekly, monthly, annually, or custom interval.
  • Start date: when the schedule begins.
  • Stop criteria: end date or total number of occurrences.
  • Per-test overrides: apply a different frequency or start date per test if needed (batch edits supported).
  1. Set clinical and billing details (as required)
  • Diagnoses (ICD-10)
  • Collection notes or special handling instructions.
  1. Review and save/activate
  • Confirm the summary (patient, provider(s), tests, frequency, start/stop).
  • Save to activate the schedule.

What happens next

  • The LIS automatically generates requisitions/orders with the correct tests on the indicated dates based on the frequency and start date.
  • You can canceled, resume, or modify the standing order at any time; changes apply to future occurrences.

More Options

Ordering Physician
Add the ordering physician to the selected test (batch processing available)
Update Patient Info
Use the menu entry if the patient information has been updated to propagate these changes to the standing orders.
Pool
By default, the LIS pools all tests scheduled for the same date/time onto a single requisition to simplify the specimen collection process.
Do Not Pool

By default, the LIS pools all tests scheduled for the same date/time onto a single requisition. When workflow or specimen logistics require it, place selected tests on a separate requisition.

Example: If a patient has a lipid panel (blood) and a urinalysis (urine) at the same date and time, create a separate requisition for the urinalysis so nursing staff can collect the urine independently while the phlebotomist draws blood.

Tips:

  • Split when different collectors, locations, or specimen types are involved.
  • Each requisition can have its own collection time, labels, and routing; verify diagnoses and bill-to details are applied to all requisitions.
Send Notification
Use this feature to proactively alert supervisors or dispatchers when advance notice is required, for example, a time-specific specimen collection or other time‑sensitive tasks.
Cases
Associate existing or new Cases to the selected tests (batch processing available)
Documents
Associate existing or new documents to the selected tests (batch processing available)

Additional Copies

By default, released results are distributed according to each client’s configured Report Rules. When a client asks you to send an extra copy to a different destination just this once, use an ad‑hoc “Additional Copy” instead of creating a new rule.

When to use an Additional Copy (one-off)

  • A single order needs an extra recipient (e.g., covering provider, patient’s specialist, attorney, case manager).
  • A temporary destination (e.g., alternate fax while the main line is down).
  • A client-specific exception that won’t repeat regularly.

Where to configure it

  • Order level: Use the Additional Copies tab within the order to add recipients for that order only.
  • Do not modify Client Report Rules if the request is one‑time or short‑lived.

📘 Instructions

  1. Click on the + button
  2. Select the Destination Type and type the email or fax
  3. By default all selected are included on the transmission but you can uncheck the options Select Automatically All Tests and select only specific tests
  4. Click Add and repeat as many times as needed
  5. The More Options has Audit to view how many times the results were sent with date and time or to resend
Notes
Note that you can only add the additional copies after the test selection. There is no limit on how many additional copies can be added
