The LIS includes a Document Management System that allows users to store files of many different types. This is especially useful when the laboratory needs to attach lab result reports from a reference lab.
When configured correctly, the LIS can transmit these attached documents along with lab results by:
fax
Or display them on the client web portal for orders and results
This feature allows laboratories to include supporting result documents together with the main lab report so recipients receive a more complete set of information.
A common example is attaching a reference laboratory report to the transmitted patient results.
To transmit documents with lab results, the following requirements must be met:
The document must be a PDF
The document must be identified as a lab result document by selecting the Lab Results checkbox on the Documents form
If these conditions are not met, the document will not be included in the result transmission.
Only documents that meet both of the following conditions are eligible for transmission with result reports:
The file format is PDF
The Lab Results checkbox is selected on the document record
This categorization tells the system that the file should be treated as a result report attachment.
There are three ways to configure result transmissions so that attached lab result documents are included.
From the Result Inquiry form:
Select the order/tests to be transmitted
Add the desired destinations:
email addresses
fax destinations
Select the Include Lab Result Documents checkbox
When this option is selected, all documents categorized as Lab Result in the Documents form will be included in the transmission.
When configuring Additional Copies from the order form, you can enable document transmission by selecting the:
Include Lab Result Documents checkbox
When checked, all associated documents categorized as Lab Result will be included with the transmitted results.
When configuring Report Rules, you can also select the:
Include Lab Result Documents checkbox
This allows the system to automatically include all documents categorized as Lab Result in the Documents form whenever results are transmitted using that report rule.
This feature works only with:
email services provided by OCL LIS
cloud storage provided by OCL LIS
If the client is using their own email service instead of the OCL LIS-provided email functionality, this feature will not be activated.
A common use case is when a laboratory receives a PDF report from a reference lab and stores it in the LIS document management system. If the document is marked as a Lab Result document, it can then be included automatically when sending the patient’s result report by email or fax, or made available through the client web portal.
To ensure the feature works correctly:
Upload the attached result document in PDF format
Always mark the document with the Lab Results checkbox if it should be transmitted with results
Verify that the transmission method is using OCL LIS email or cloud storage
Confirm that the correct transmission option includes Include Lab Result Documents
The Sending Result Reports with Attached Documents feature allows the LIS to include PDF lab result documents, such as reference lab reports, in result transmissions and portal display.
To use this feature successfully:
store the document in the LIS
make sure it is a PDF
mark it as Lab Results
enable Include Lab Result Documents in one of the supported transmission methods:
Result Inquiry
Additional Copies
Report Rules
This helps ensure recipients receive complete reporting documentation along with the main lab results.
