Additional Fees - non-test billable items
Use the Additional Fees form to add procedures or services that are not laboratory tests (e.g., venipuncture, phlebotomy, STAT surcharge, courier pickup, travel fee). These items post as billable CPTs but never appear on result reports or test statistics.
Why use this instead of “bill-only tests”?
- OCL LIS supports bill-only tests, but Additional Fees is the more robust approach: it avoids creating fake tests that clutter metrics, TAT, and utilization reports.
Fields
- Code: short internal identifier (e.g., PHLEB, STATFEE).
- Name: clear label shown to billing users.
- CPT Code: the billable CPT code associated with the fee.
- Description: optional detail for context/audit.
How it works
- Create the fee once in this form.
- Add the fee to an order during order entry or in billing (Additional Fees). Additional fees can also be added in batches from Order Search → More Options → Additional Fees
- On export, the LIS translates the fee to the configured CPT and includes it with the claim/invoice.
- Fees do not generate results and do not print on clinical result reports.
📘 Quick steps
- Open Billing → Additional Fees.
- Click New.
- Enter Code, Name, CPT Code, and Description.
- Save.
- Apply the fee to orders as needed (Order Entry → Additional Fees or in Billing).
Best practices
- Keep codes short and unique; align CPTs with payer policies.
- Use descriptions to note when the fee applies (e.g., “Per visit,” “After-hours”).
- Prefer Additional Fees over bill-only tests to keep analytics and TAT clean.
- Periodically review fees and CPTs for compliance updates.
