Auto Validation Rules Settings - global control and scheduling

Use Auto Validation Rules Settings to enable or disable auto‑validation by module, set how often the LIS scans for new results to auto‑validate, and define how far back it searches. You can also control how Critical Results are handled.

What you can configure

  • Global module switches
    • Activate or deactivate auto‑validation per module (e.g., Clinical, Toxicology, Microbiology, etc.).
    • Saves time by avoiding rule‑by‑rule deactivation.
  • Scan interval (minutes)
    • How frequently the LIS checks for new or updated results to auto‑validate.
  • Lookback window (prior days)
    • How many prior days of results the engine searches each cycle.
  • Critical Results handling
    • Checkbox to hold or ignore Critical Results:
      • Hold Critical Results: exclude criticals from auto‑validation so they require manual review.
      • Ignore Critical Results: allow auto‑validation to proceed even if a result is flagged critical (use with extreme caution; ensure downstream critical notification policies are enforced).

📘 Instructions: Configure Auto Validation Rules Settings

  1. Open Tools → Auto Validation Rules Settings.
  2. Modules Tabs, toggle each module On/Off to activate/deactivate auto‑validation globally.
  3. Set Scan Interval (minutes) to control how often the engine runs (e.g., 5–15 minutes) each module has its own configuration.
  4. Set Prior Days to Search (lookback) to limit how far back the engine scans each cycle (e.g., 1–3 days).
  5. Critical Results:
    • Check “Hold Critical Results” to exclude criticals from auto‑validation, or uncheck to allow auto‑validation on criticals (checkbox labeled “Hold Critical Results,” checking it disable auto‑validation for criticals).
  6. Click Save/Apply.
  7. Monitor the Unreleased/queue to confirm activity after the next scan interval.

Best practices

  • Start conservatively:
    • Scan Interval: 10–15 minutes initially to observe load and behavior.
    • Lookback: 1–7 days to keep searches efficient; widen only for special catch‑up needs.
  • Keep criticals manual by default (Hold) to meet safety and regulatory expectations; rely on documented critical notification workflows.
  • Use module toggles to pause auto‑validation during instrument changes, reagent issues, or rule tuning.
  • Pair with robust rules:

Common scenarios

  • Weekend catch‑up: Temporarily increase lookback to 3–15 days, then revert.
  • High‑volume analyzer go‑live: Disable module briefly, validate rules on a subset, then re‑enable.
  • Critical policy update: Ensure “Hold Critical Results” is enabled while updating notification procedures.

Troubleshooting

  • Nothing is auto‑validating:
    • Check module toggles are On, rules are Active, and the Scan Interval isn’t set too high.
    • Verify there are eligible results within the lookback window.
  • Delays or backlog:
    • Reduce lookback, shorten intervals moderately, or run a one‑time manual validation pass (if supported).
  • Criticals auto‑validated unexpectedly:
    • Confirm the Critical Results checkbox state and individual rule criteria; check if the analyzer suppresses the critical flag.
  • Intermittent operation:
    • Confirm system time/time‑zone, scheduler/service status, and that no maintenance window paused processing.
