Microbiology — Antibiotics master file (predefined antibiotics)

Use the Antibiotics master file to predefine the antimicrobial agents available in your LIS. These definitions power susceptibility entry and consistent reporting across microbiology.

How it’s used

  • When an organism is selected in result entry, the associated antibiotic panel loads.
  • Enter MIC.
  • Cascade rules and comments are applied automatically; users can add additional comments as needed (with audit trail for overrides).

📘 Instructions: Add antibiotics

Follow the steps below to add antibiotics.

  1. Click Microbiology.
  2. Click Antibiotics.
  3. When the form opens, fill in the fields marked with asterisks.
    • Include name/code.
  4. Click Add to save.

Tip: After adding antibiotics, link them to your Antibiotic Groups/Panels so they appear by default during susceptibility entry.

Best practices

  • Standardize names and abbreviations to match your reports and antibiogram.
  • Configure organism-group–specific breakpoints (e.g., Enterobacterales vs. Pseudomonas) to avoid misinterpretation.
  • Add interpretive comments for intrinsic resistance (e.g., “Enterococcus spp. are intrinsically resistant to cephalosporins”).
  • Periodically review panels against your local antibiogram and formulary.

Troubleshooting

  • Antibiotic missing from entry: Ensure it’s Active and included in the relevant Antibiotic Group/Panel.

With a well-maintained Antibiotics master, susceptibility entry becomes faster, more accurate, and consistent—supporting clear reports and effective antimicrobial stewardship.
